In 2019 NA CAPE offered a one-week field research trip in Tokyo to undergraduate and honours students to pursue their own independent research project as the city prepares to host the Summer Olympic Games in 2020.
After completing an online introduction to Japanese society and culture, life in cities, and training in qualitative data gathering and recording, students were guided through the advancement of a research project they they undertook in Tokyo. Students designed their own projects, and they spanned from architecture to kiwi fruit.
Half of the week in Tokyo was used for visits to a number of areas regarding social, economic, or political issues facing the city. During the other half, students undertook individual field trips to places they have researched and contacted prior to their arrival.
We hope to run this programme again in 2021.
