The CAPEs Advisory Board offers guidance on the strategic direction and approach of the CAPEs, ensuring that our work is underpinned by a wealth of expertise and experience across national and international business, trade, education and cultures.
Chair
Dr Alan Bollard (pictured back right) is the Executive Director of the Singapore-based APEC Secretariat, the body that promotes trade, investment and sustainable economic growth in the Asia-Pacific. Prior to joining APEC, Dr Bollard was the Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand from 2002 to 2012. Other roles include Secretary to the New Zealand Treasury (1998-2002), Chairman of the New Zealand Commerce Commission (1994 – 2008) and Director of the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (1987-1994). In 2012 he was honoured as a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Catherine Beard (pictured front right) is Executive Director, ManufacturingNZ & ExportNZ, working with government and other key decision makers on issues of concern to exporters and manufacturers. Catherine has spent the last 20 years as a lobbyist and advocate for several industries, including on climate change issues for the energy-intensive sector, all aspects of the fire and general insurance sector and dairy issues in the agricultural sector. She represents BusinessNZ on the GS1 New Zealand Board and is on the NZ US Council Executive Committee. Catherine co-founded a design and manufacturing business that won national design awards for children’s furniture.
David Darling (pictured back left) has been the Chief Executive Officer at Pacific Edge Limited (previously known as Pacific Edge Biotechnology Ltd.) since November 2003 and serves as its Managing director. David is a scientist with a background in genetics and has a large part of his career in biotechnology business start-ups and development. He joined Pacific Edge Biotechnology Ltd. from Rubicon Ltd. where he served as Director of Biotechnology Business Development. He has over 30 years’ business experience in life sciences and biotechnology and has considerable experience developing start-up companies and developing early stage technologies.
Danny Chan (pictured front left) co-founded Academic Colleges Group (ACG), an education and training company which was acquired in 2016 by private equity firm Pacific Equity Partners. Danny’s numerous business interests include fund management, flower exporting, and seafood processing. He sits on a number of boards including the NZ China Council Executive Board, Asia NZ Foundation and Auckland Confucius Institute.
