Japan is one of New Zealand’s key trading partners. In the wake of the Covid-19 crisis, Japan has tried to balance its health responses with its hopes for hosting the Olympics and letting its economy operate reasonably freely.
Despite Japan’s experience in 2003 with SARS, in 2020 a sense of urgency evolved somewhat belatedly due to initially low infection numbers. Japan entered a state of national emergency in mid-April. Economists have predicted that Japan’s GDP will shrink by about 5% this year.
This workshop addresses the evolving situation in Japan from a New Zealand perspective. We will provide an overview of Japan’s response to Covid-19 with a focus on economic issues. We will also outline changes in Japanese consumer behaviour during the crisis, and discuss how these changes may affect New Zealand business opportunities.
The workshop will be interactive, providing opportunities for discussions, and also include a live update from a New Zealand business operating in Japan.
