Since 2005 Fonterra has invested around $1.5 billion in three large, strategic initiatives in China. So far it has lost $1bn on all three, thanks to its write-downs on the investments, operating losses and debt service costs. Undeterred, Fonterra says its China strategy is developing well, with the country accounting now for a quarter of its global sales.
